Evelyn K. Hord's Obituary
Evelyn Kaye Barnett Mideke Hord died on November 13, 2013 of heart failure at the age of 84. Kaye was born in 1929 in New York City, the only child of Millie and Ray Barnett. Millie was a dancer but she died young, when Kaye was only 2 years old. Kaye’s Aunt Alice Mideke raised her in Oklahoma City. Kaye was a member of Kappa Delta sorority and graduated Oklahoma State University where she met and married her husband. She is preceded in death by Lawrence T Hord Jr., architect, her loving husband of nearly 50 years. Together they raised their 6 children in Memphis.Kaye leaves 6 children: Susan Garts (Jim) of Memphis, Larry Hord of Houston, Jack Hord (Sharron) of Corpus Christi, Alice Hill (Greg) of Louisville, Carter Hord (Lisa) of Memphis, and Mary Barnes (Richard) of Memphis. She also leaves 6 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren with many happy memories.Kaye was an involved and very dedicated member of St Louis Catholic Church where she is a past president of the Ladies Altar Guild, and also a past member of Madonna Circle and Circle Arts. Kaye and her husband, Larry particularly enjoyed Memphis Cotton Carnival and were active members of Osiris in their younger years. She enjoyed volunteering at St. Francis Hospital during the years just after her children were grown.Kaye will be remembered by her neighbors at Trezevant Terrace where she has lived happily for 4 years, and Allen Morgan Health and Rehabilitation Center for the recent year and a half, and by many lifelong friends who will miss her smile and enthusiasm for life. Kaye enjoyed ice cream and a “really good cookie”.Kaye’s family greatly appreciates the extraordinary care provided her in the last two weeks by the Methodist Hospice Residence staff of gifted caregivers. Visitation will be at Memorial Park Funeral Home on Poplar Avenue from 5-7 pm with a rosary prayed at 7:00 on Friday Nov 15. The Mass of Christian Burial will be at St. Louis Church on White Station Road at 1:30 pm on Saturday Nov 16, followed by burial at Memorial Park Cemetery on Poplar Avenue.Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery, 5668 Poplar Ave. Memphis, TN 38119, (901)767-8930, “Behind the Stone Wall”.
