Eugene Crawford Scobey, Sr.'s Obituary
On June 27, 2022, Eugene Crawford Scobey, Sr., passed from this Earth to be with his life-long love and wife of nearly 69 years, Mary Frances Scobey, who passed 17 days earlier. Gene was born on January 10, 1927, in Coffeeville, Mississippi, to Reuben Bert and Pauline Crawford Scobey. His parents and brother, Bert Scobey, preceded him in death. Gene was the Salutatorian of the 1944 Coffeeville High School class and began studies at The University of Mississippi before volunteering and serving in the Army Air Force during World War II (stationed in Grand Island, Nebraska). He then graduated from his beloved Ole Miss with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business and Accounting in 1950 (where he was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity) and moved thereafter to Memphis to work for Goodyear.
In 1952, he and Mary Frances met in Memphis and married in 1953. Gene and Mary raised their two children, Gene, Jr., and Julianne, while Gene continued work as an Accountant with various Memphis companies, including 25 years with Murdock Acceptance Corporation, finishing his career with Pancho’s Restaurants in 1999.
Gene enjoyed his time with his three grandsons, John and Justin Scobey, and William Parks, always following their collective exploits and achievements. He loved the great outdoors and joined Mary and Julianne traveling to many different destinations around the world. Gene’s favorite trips were to Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon as they brought to life his childhood memories from old Western films and television programs.
Gene is most remembered as a kind, quiet, modest, and humble man, a loving father and grandfather, and a faithful servant of the lord. He had a love for animals, particularly his beloved cats. He loved the beauty of nature always enjoying birdwatching and gardening in his yard.
Gene was also a devoted follower of Ole Miss sports teams, football in particular, attending as many Rebel games as he could. Fortunately, he was thrilled to enjoy watching Ole Miss’ baseball national championship the day before his passing.
Gene is survived by his son, Dr. Eugene Crawford Scobey, Jr. (Suzanne), his daughter, Julianne Scobey (Bill) Parks, his grandsons, John Scobey, Dr. Justin Scobey, and William Parks, step-grandchildren Carolyn Frances Parks and Robert Parks, as well as his sister-in-law Jean Scobey and nephews David and Mark Scobey.
