Inspector Barksdale was a fine man and a no-nonsense leader. He was a steadfast and loyal friend to my family always. As a fresh out of high school young person, he took the time to suggest I seek a career in law enforcement, with the Memphis Police Department.
It was a very sound and solid suggestion.
He was very candid and sincere about the by words of the Memphis Police Department. Knowledge, Courage, and Integrity.
I can remember the words he expressed to me as if they were spoken just a few seconds ago: "Johnny, your measure as a man, and as a citizen of our country and city, vitally depends on how much sincerity you place on the oath you take upon being sworn in. Take that oath to heart and never lose your belief in those words. Someone's life may depend on it!"
I lost track of Inspector Barksdale over the years but never forgot what he had said. No one could ask for a better person to support you, or be ready to help, or offer a word of encouragement. He was a very good and decent man, who saw his duty and did it without hesitation.
I offer my sincerest and deepest sympathy to his family as they have lost, as well as we all, one of the best examples of Knowledge, Courage, and Integrity.
