Emanuel "Manny" Peter Scarmoutsos' Obituary
Emanuel Peter Scarmoutsos (Manny) died Easter Sunday, the feast day of the resurrection, April 4, 2010. He was born in Corning, New York, September 1, 1929. His family operated Crystal Confectionary until 1951. He has continued making chocolates for his friends since. He joined the Marines and fought on the front lines of the Korean War as a Captain until 1953. He was the liaison officer for the Greek battalion while in Korea. He attended Georgetown University Law School in 1956 and graduated in 1957 from Southern Law University. He practiced law in Memphis for 49 years until he retired in 2009. He taught business law classes as an adjunct professor at Memphis University. He was a past president of the Memphis Trial Lawyers from 1985-86 and President of the Tennessee Bar Association. He attended the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Memphis. He was the Supreme Council of AHEPA (American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association). He was also National GOYA (Greek Orthodox Youth of America) Chairman. Manuel was an outstanding college basketball, football, and track athlete. He was recently inducted into the AHEPA Hall of Fame with the likes of Bob Costas and Pete Sampras. He refereed college basketball and was a star fast pitch softball pitcher. Manuel authored a book “Unfrocked and Unashamed” which featured true courtroom stories that occurred during his professional career which displayed the comic side of his personality. He is survived by his wife of fifty-four years, Georgia Avgeris Scarmoutsos; his son, Peter; daughter, Eve; two grandsons, Manuel and John; sisters, Matina Chigounis of Cherry Hill, NJ and Katina Bashakes of Royal Oak, MI. He was cared for by his brother in law and closest friend Dr. John Avgeris. He was preceded in death by his son, Andrew. Visitation will be from 5-7 pm Wednesday at Memorial Park Funeral Home, Funeral services will be Thursday at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church at 11:00 am. Burial will be at West Tennessee Veterans Cemetery, with military honors. The family requests that memorials be sent to the Andrew Scarmoutsos Scholarship fund, in care of Charles Patton, Attorney at Law, 5100 Poplar Avenue, Suite 2723, Memphis, TN 38137.
