Elsie Chapman Landry's Obituary
Elsie Virginia Chapman Landry died Sunday, March 8, 2015, at Baptist Hospital. She was born January 9, 1923, in Memphis, Tennessee. She grew up in Cordova with her five brothers and sisters, and graduated from Germantown High School. During WWII she worked for the Office of Strategic Services in Washington, D.C., and move to Germany to continue working with the OSS after the war. She married Edgar Allen Owen in 1947 and moved to Virginia, where her two sons, Richard and Larry, were born. Soon after, she returned to Germany with her family to work for the CIA before coming home to Memphis, where she lived the rest of her life, working for almost 25 years at Plough, Inc. In 1967 Elsie married Austin Landry, who died in April 2011. Elsie was predeceased by all her siblings as well as her son Larry, but is survived by her son Richard Owen, Larry’s wife Beth Owen, her granddaughters, Kathryn Owen and Elizabeth Owen, and her grandson, Matthew Owen. Elsie was funny, feisty and active up until the end of her long and busy life. She was loved by many, but the greatest joy of her life was her grandchildren. She and Austin were long-time members of Trinity Baptist Church. Visitation will begin at 1:30 p.m. and followed by funeral services at 2:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 10 at Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery, 5668 Poplar Ave. Memphis, TN 38119, “Behind the Stone Wall.”
