Elsie Baker Cowart, 90, a longtime Memphis resident, was called home Sunday, May 18, after a brief illness. She was born in Ft. Worth, TX to Elizabeth Baker and Dr. Erin P. Baker, pastor of Labelle Baptist Church from 1926 to 1944. She was an honor graduate of Southside High School, worked at Kennedy Army Hospital during WWII, taught ceramics in various community programs through the years, and was active in her church, Woodland Presbyterian. Mrs. Cowart was married to the late Hal G. Cowart for 64 years and survived by her brother, Dr. Eugene Baker; sister-in-law, Anita Baker; sister, Edna Dalrymple; daughter, Linda Cowart; cousins; nieces; and nephews. Visitation will begin 9:30 a.m. until the graveside service begins at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 22 at Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery. The family is extremely grateful for the care provided by the doctors and nurses of Baptist Memorial Hospital East, and the Memphis Jewish Home and Rehab.
