Mrs. Elsie Maxine Black passed away on November 16, 2025. She was born July 15, 1934, in New England, North Dakota, to Mr. Alfred Larson and Mrs. Myrtle Audus Larson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hugh Elmer Black.
She attended high school at Plainview Academy in Redfield, SD and studied Pre-Nursing at Union College in Lincoln, NE. She then got a degree at the Paradise Valley School of Nursing in National City, CA and started her long nursing career there in CA. She left CA to move back to Redfield, SD to help take care of her father who became ill. After he passed, she went back to school and got her Bachelor of Science in Nursing at South Dakota State College in Brookings, SD. During her 42-year nursing career, she was a psychiatric nurse for Veterans Affairs (the VA), an emergency room nurse, a director of home health, a head nurse, and a public health nurse.
Her hobbies included gardening, art, playing golf (and got a hole in one!), playing the piano and organ, hiking, and travelling. She was active in the church community, where she volunteered frequently, and played the organ for many years. She was also dedicated to her family and was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother.
She is survived by daughter Katherine Black of Eureka Springs, AR, Kevin Black, of Sherwood, AR, and Kelli Holloman (Frank) of Germantown, TN and leaves behind 4 grandchildren: Elizabeth Matteson, Candi Lynn Kennedy, Allen Black, and Ryan Holloman. Elsie is also survived by 8 great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Alzheimer’s Association (https://www.alz.org) or the charity of your choice. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 13th at 10:00 a.m. at Farmington Presbyterian Church, 8245 Farmington Blvd, Germantown, TN 38139.
