I moved away from the Memphis area many years ago and did not find out about Coach Turner's passing until about a year ago. I played for him at REHS, Class of 1978. He had a profound influence on me and the many players that he coached. To this day I sometimes think of or pass along a quote from Coach Turner. He was tough, and he demanded toughness and discipline from his players. Our rivals back then were Bartlett and Craigmont. We stomped Bartlett my senior year, but lost to Craigmont 7-6 on a hail Mary touchdown at the end of the game. RIP Coach.
I had recently lost my g/f in a auto accident and was down on myself and the world. Coach grabbed me by the shoulders shook the heck outta me and asked me if “anything I was doing to myself? And to get my head outta my rear end and get on with life. Thanks Coach, you snatched me from a deep dark place and probably saved my life. RIP Coach
Very sad time my friend it’s hit me real hard I been in tears for two days since I heard the news I love you brother
Coach, outside my own father has had the biggest influence on me and my life. Today my wife and kids have all relived the experiences I have had with Coach and other players. Even after high school football and one year in college ball, I faced many challenges that Coach has unknowingly helped me get through. The “if if’s and nuts were fruits and butts we all would have a Merry Christmas” to “getting up one more time” all resonate so strongly inside me. One time facing a personal challenge in my life I stopped by about 2001 and Coach told me “the man on the mountain didn’t fall there by accident” still lives strong inside of me today. What I would give to run sprints one more time for you Coach.God Bless Jim Hulley
Derek Wood Coach Turner was the best teacher, coach, friend and most of all father figure to every student that he ever met. My prayers goes out to you Tad and Dale. Coach Turner was the dad I wished I had. Rest well Coach
I had the privilege of having coach Turner as my coach 4 years at Millington high school. Coach Turner was a very hard nosed and disciplined coach for whom I loved very much. Coach Turner was like another dad to me. In 1986 my senior year we played briarcrest high. they were picked to win state that year. The Millington boys were playing at briarcrest, they were big and strong, that was nothing coach Turner was ever even concerned about. Millington tied with briarcrest with 7 seconds left on clock 4th quater, 4th down on the 7 yard line Millington had the ball. Turner calls a time out. He walks on the field, I could tell he was thinking of what play to call. Turners rules were no one talks in the huddle except for him and the quarterback, Fred Johnson was quarterback, me playing left guard, I gently raised my hand to speak and got just a nod from Turner to do so. I said coach run it my way. Turner asked you going to get it in there for me Sumner. I replied yes sir, Turner called the play coming right off guard. Fred Johnson and I ran in the end zone Fred untouched final Millington 35 briarcrest 28. Coach Turner had faith in me and I did him as well, that was the last game I had the privilege of being with coach Turner on the field. I spoke with him by phone around three years ago and we talked about that and other things. Coach Turner was in bed when I called, but as he explained to me I’m not the only one that had called him at night wanting to say hello or might need some advice. Coach Turner not only cared about winning but more so he cared about others. I had called him because I wanted to hear from him and tell him about a near death experience I had in 2011. He was always there no matter who it was. I knew there was always love between us, I told him that night, I said before we got off the phone I love you coach and he replied back I love you too tim. I always thought about coach Turner through out the years. I had been thinking of him the last couple months and was going to call him again. I didn’t get that chance. I regret not being able to do so, however, when we talked the last time we did say I love you! That was awesome and I cried many tears that night as well as tonight when I got the news of his passing. Coach Turner and I always had a good relationship on and off the football field. He was genuine, a hard nosed coach but loved everyone and always had a smile on his face unless of course you done something you were not suppose to do! However after the discipline he gave you, he would just look at you and smile, you knew his love for you was always there. Thank God for this man that has affected so many young men’s life’s. Tears have fallen tonight and I have a lot of hurt in my heart because of his passing. He was just one of those men that you thought would never die, coach I will cherish the memories we had to my last days. Coach, I love you! You will never be fogotten! My prayers go out to all family and friends. I’m so sorry I won’t be able to make it to the funeral to show my respects although they are all coming from the heart and are very sincere. Coach Turner was a winner and he passed a winner! Gone but never fogotten, again, coach Turner I love you deeply! Thank you so much for all you have done for me. Men like you is what this world needs more of! I wonder why you never ran for president? Never mind I’m just kidding I know why! You were way to honest, loyal, and you definitely were excellent in what you done here on earth! Until we meet again. #64 Millington high school class of 1986.
