Elizabeth Rogers' Obituary
Elizabeth Rogers, 90,passed away on Tuesday, April 6, 2010. Elizabeth was born in Memphis, TN on Aug 18, 1919, to Verna Hall Coates and Alfred James Coates. She married Alvin Jesse Rogers of Vicksburg, MS on Oct 3, 1937 at St. Luke’s Methodist Church. Major Alvin Rogers was a World War II veteran and preceded her in death on May 12, 1968. Elizabeth is survived by two daughters, Linda Rogers Vance and Hazel Ann Rogers, R.N. of Memphis, TN and her son, Dr. Ronald Wayne Rogers of Tuscaloosa, AL. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Dr. Andy Rogers, Kim Sanders, SPC Shelby Pruden, Dr. Catherine Rogers, Wesley Box, and Jesse Vance and her two great grandchildren, Natalie Box and Nathan Box. She joined St. Luke’s Methodist Church in 1931, although she was in attendance since being on The Cradle Roll at the old Buntyn Church on Southern Ave. She was a Sunday School teacher and Methodist Youth Fellowship Counselor for several years in the Junior High Dept. In the 1950’s she was one of the first three women ever elected to the Board of Steward’s of St. Luke’s. Elizabeth was a twelve year student at Messick School. During high school she was a Debate Team Member and performed in the school’s Operettas. She was member of the Golden Key Circle of the King’s Daughters and Sons. She was also a member of the Daughter’s of the American Revolution and The Loyalty Class of St. Luke’s. She was pianist for the class in addition to playing for Wednesday Bible Study and many church special occasions. She retired from the Trust Department of NBC Bank. Her many hobbies included: tending to her garden, bird watching, traveling, and playing bridge.Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 10, 2010, at 11:00 am, at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, with the family recieving freinds from at 10:00am.The family requests that in ieu of flowers memorial donations be made to St Luke’s United Methodist Church.
