Elizabeth Jacobs Collier's Obituary
Elizabeth Jacobs Collier, beloved mother and “Gran”, passed away on November 2 at Kirby Pines. She was born in Middleton, TN to Wickliffe and Lola Elizabeth Jacobs and was the seventh of eleven children. After moving to Memphis after her high school graduation, Elizabeth worked in the printing industry and retired as Vice-President of Rodney Baber Printing Co. after 33 years. She would work for Mercury Printing Company for another 10 years before deciding that her second retirement would complete her career.
Elizabeth’s faith in God was central to her life. She was a member of Highland Church of Christ for 79 years, and could be found working in the nursery or serving on the Fellowship Committee – cooking for and hosting church-wide potlucks and Wednesday night meals. Her TLC Class would be the source of life-long friendships and would bond people who would treasure doing life together.
All who knew Liz, knew of her love of basketball. She excelled in a high school career and after moving to Memphis at age 17, she played in women’s leagues with the Memphis Park Commission. It was here that she collected MVP awards, was named to All-Star Teams and in 1984 was honored to be inducted into the Memphis Park Commission Hall of Fame. Liz could always be found cheering for her much loved basketball Tigers and was a life-long fan and season ticket holder for many years.
Her benevolent life of 96 years leaves a rich legacy of service, kindness, faithfulness and abundant love for her family. She is preceded in death by her husband of 23 years, Lee Earl Collier. She leaves to cherish her memory her twin daughters, Glenda Kiser (David) of Bartlett, TN and Linda Chadwell (Kevin) of Chicago, IL; and her four grandchildren, Graham (Lindy) Kiser, Carter Kiser, Caroline Chadwell and Taylor (Abby) Chadwell. She was thrilled to be expecting the births of two great-grandchildren.
A service celebrating Elizabeth’s life will be held at Highland Church of Christ on Thursday, November 7, 2024. Visitation will be held in the Chapel at 11:00 AM. Funeral services will be at 12:00 PM. The family asks that memorials be sent to Highland Church of Christ (400 N. Houston Levee Rd., Cordova, TN 38018), Harding Academy (1100 Cherry Rd., Memphis, TN 38117) or HopeWorks (3337 Summer Ave., Memphis, TN 38122).
