Elinor Jeanette Lewis' Obituary
Elinor Jeanette Galatas Lewis, 83, passed away peacefully on August 24, 2016 in Memphis, TN surrounded by her family and close friends. The daughter of Nannie Lee and John Ivy Galatas, Jeanette was born July 24, 1933 in Greenville, MS where she spent her youth. In Greenville she enjoyed singing in the Methodist Church choir and often performed solos. Her talents also included playing the clarinet and baton twirling in the high school marching band. She began her professional career as a secretary for Foley’s Department store in Houston, TX, and later moved to Memphis where she took employment at Goldsmith’s Department Store. It was there that she served in their executive offices as the highly dedicated assistant to the Vice President, Bob Goldsmith. In 1967 she married Larry Lewis and together they spent many happy years raising a family and traveling. Jeanette also served the Memphis community by volunteering for the Women’s Exchange, Hutchison PTA where she served as president, and Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital. Later in life she most enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren. Jeanette is survived by her daughters Lauren Rower (Jeff), Jeanne Joyner (Rodney), and son Kevin Lewis (Kaziah), her grandchildren Ivy and Ryan Raebel, Amelia Lewis, Jack Hill, Lilly and Katy and Andrew Rower. She is also survived by her brother-in-law and wife Dr. Myron and Gail Lewis, and her sister-in-law Nancy Galatas of Greenville, MS, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services will be held at Christ United Methodist Church on Monday, August 29 at 10:30 am with burial following at Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends immediately before the funeral service from 9:30 to 10:30 am. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to Le Bonheur or St. Jude hospitals“Celebrating Life Behind the Stone Wall”.
