Eleanor Whitaker Griffin's Obituary
Eleanor Whitaker Griffin, 89, passed away January 30, 2018. She was born July 16, 1928, in Cumberland Gap, TN to Flora Ellen Southern and Arthur Wheeler Whitaker. She graduated from Middlesboro High School, Kentucky in 1945 and the University of Tennessee, Knoxville in 1949. She was a very active gardener at the Shelby County Community Gardens at Shelby Farms for over 25 years and most recently served as Garden Coordinator. Known as Mimi by her family, Eleanor is survived by her children, Charles Gregory “Chase” Griffin, III (Carol S.) and Arthur Whitaker “Whit” Griffin (Carol O.); grandchildren, Gregory James Griffin (Natasha), Sara McKenzie Edwards (Stephen), Diana Phillips (Rob), and Jesse Erin Griffin; great-grandchildren, Hadley Grace Griffin, Eliana Elizabeth Griffin, Robert Jackson “RJ” Phillips, and Griffin Timothy Edwards. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles G. “Chuck” Griffin, Jr. and sister, Jean Snider. The family will receive friends 5:30-7:00 p.m., Friday, February 2 and a memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Saturday, February 3 at Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery. A family burial will be held in Harrogate Cemetery, Harrogate, TN. The family requests memorial donations be sent to Baptist Trinity Hospice or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
