Eleanor Dean's Obituary
Eleanor Dean, the eldest daughter of Thomas William and Nell Woodruff Green, was born on March 11, 1921, in Memphis, TN. A life-long resident of Memphis, she died June 8, 2012, at the age of 91. In 1941, she married Charles Woodrow Dean, a chemical engineer, who predeceased her in 2003 after 62 years of marriage. Both were active members of Christ United Methodist Church, he serving on the board and she as president of the Women of the Church. In later years they worshipped at First Evangelical Church. Eleanor also attended Bible Study Fellowship and Community Bible Study for many years. Involved in civic activities throughout her life, Eleanor volunteered with The Symphony League, Brooks Museum of Art, Duration Club, and Dur-Arts. She was an officer in each of these organizations, including president of Dur-Arts as well as secretary of Duration Club and The Symphony League. She was a Founding Life Member of Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary and on the board of Decorative Arts Trust. Every spring she and Charles enjoyed the activities of Memphi during Carnival Memphis, dancing the night away, reliving earlier times at the Peabody Skyway. As a 50-year member of Chickasaw Country Club, Eleanor enjoyed playing golf with her husband and the nine-hole women’s golf group. Her children and grandchildren cherish many memories of fun family times together there. Eleanor loved and took great pride in her family – husband, Charles and daughters, Diane Davis (Joe) of Memphis and Carole Avery (William) of Dallas, TX, and of course, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren – Courtney Davis McDonnell (John) of Memphis, TN, Jeffrey Dean Davis of Denver, CO, Rachel Avery Horton (Bret), Marjorie and Crawford of Durham, NC, Allison Avery Loaring-Clark (Jeffrey), and Luke of Guam, and Lauren Avery Garcia (Edward) and Zion of Austin, TX. Eleanor leaves her sister, Martha Leonard of Long Island, NY, and Helen Crain of Memphis. Two sisters predeceased her – Jean Carr of Knoxville, TN, and Betty Green, whom for many years she and Charles lovingly cared for. In addition to her sisters, she leaves her brothers, William Green and Howard Green of Memphis, Robert Malcolm Green of Camden, TN, and Donald Green of Las Vegas, NV. A service in her honor will be held Wednesday, June 13, at 1 p.m. at Memorial Park Funeral Home. Visitation will precede the service from 12-1 p.m. Donations in her memory may be made to the The Symphony League or The Salvation Army Auxiliary. The family requests that memorials be sent to the charity of donor’s choice. Memorial Park Funeral Home, “Behind the stone wall”, 901-767-8930.
