Elbert Nothern's Obituary
Elbert Floran “Bert” Nothern, 86, Professor emeritus and Dean at the University of Memphis died August 25, 2009 at his home in Germantown Village of complications from Alzheimer’s disease.He taught at the University of Kansas before coming in 1958 to the University of Memphis where he retired in 1990. He held graduate degrees from both the University of Arkansas and Harvard. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Memphis where he served as a Deacon Emeritus. During World War II, he served in the US Army and participated in the Battle of the Bulge.He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Fran Powell Nothern and his sister, Mary Louise Nothern of Jonesboro, Arkansas.A private graveside service was held at Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorials may be sent to First Baptist Television Ministry, 200 East Parkway North, Memphis, TN 38112.
