E.L. Hutton's Obituary
E.L. Hutton, passed away on June 5, 2016, at the age of 89. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sara H. Hutton, and is survived by his two daughters, Cheryl H. Leeming (Frank) and Gwynne Hutton (John Granstaff), his two granddaughters, Alison McCallum (Michael) and Meredith Kirkland (Matt) and his two great-granddaughter, Mae and Willa McCallum. After completing high school at Messick High School in Memphis, Tennessee, E.L. served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and subsequently practiced law in Memphis for 35 years. In the 1960’s, E.L. began refereeing and assigning basketball officials. In the late 60’s, the Tennessee Secondary Schools Athletic Association (TSSAA) appointed him Supervisor and Assigning Officer for the Memphis-Shelby Basketball Officials Association and he remained a Supervisor until his death. In 1985, he was appointed Commissioner of the Tennessee Collegiate Athletic Conference and continued serving as Commissioner when it was renamed the TranSouth Collegiate Athletic Conference. E.L. was inducted into the TSSAA Hall of Fame and was awarded the distinguished service award from the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NIAAA). He was inducted into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame in 2006. The family wishes to thank the wonderful staff at Quince Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and at Crossroads Hospice for their kindness and support. All are invited to gather with the family to celebrate his life from 12:30 -2:30 p.m. Sunday, June 12 at Memorial Park Funeral Home’s Parkside Event Center. A private family burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, any memorials be sent to The House of Mews, 933 S. Cooper St., Memphis, TN 38104.
