Dr. Edwin Scott's Obituary
Edwin Lee Scott died on Wednesday, January 2, at his Kirby Pines Retirement Community residence. He was born in Memphis on August 23, 1926, the son of Joseph W. Scott and Irma Smith Scott at Methodist Hospital, where he later was a staff physician for many years. He had two brothers, Joseph M. Scott, of Memphis, and Gene W. Scott, of Williamsburg, KY, both now deceased. A graduate of Central High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1944 and served until being discharged in 1946. He received two degrees from the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Bachelor of Electrical Engineering and Master of Science in Electrical Engineering. He married Mary Blanche McMullen, who survives him, on August 18, 1951. Having worked for Schlumberger, Standard Oil of NJ, and Esso Research Labs, he returned to Memphis in 1956 to attend medical school. He received his M.D. from the University of Tennessee College of Medicine in 1960. He was an intern at John Gaston Hospital, served as a resident in internal medicine at the VA Hospital in Memphis, and practiced medicine in Whitehaven from 1961 to 1997, first as a general practitioner, then as an internist, twice certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine. He was devoted to his patients. A life-long Presbyterian, he was for many years a member of Whitehaven Presbyterian Church, where he served as a ruling elder, and most recently of Germantown Presbyterian Church. He is survived by Mrs. Scott, to whom he was married for 67 years; by three sons, the Rev. Stephen W. Scott (wife Laurie), of Clemmons, NC; Jeffrey M. Scott (Allison Tanner), of Kansas City, MO; Edwin L. Scott Jr. (Mimi Torrington), of Austin, TX; five grandsons; three granddaughters; and five great-grandchildren. A service celebrating Dr. Scott’s life will be held Sunday, January 6, 2:30 p.m., at Germantown Presbyterian Church, led by the Rev. Dr. Will Jones, the Rev. Stephen Scott, and the Rev. Will Scott (a grandson). Interment at Memorial Park at 1:00 p.m. will precede the service.
