Edwin A. Phillipy's Obituary
Edwin A. Phillipy, 74, passed away unexpectedly at his home July 19, 2014. He is survived by his wife of nearly fifty years, Claudia Powers Phillipy; his sons Edwin Blake Phillipy (Jill) and Craig Carter Phillipy (Amy) of Knoxville; his daughter, Allyson Ann Phillipy of Memphis; and three grandchildren: Carter, Camille, and Maggie Phillipy, all of Knoxville. Mr. Phillipy was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. O.R. Phillipy, and his three brothers: Ralph K. Phillipy, C. DeWayne Phillipy, and Edward E. Phillipy, all of Memphis. Mr. Phillipy attended the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, and was on the Vol Freshman Football Team of 1958. Following college, Mr. Phillipy worked for Massachusetts Mutual Insurance Company for twenty four years, specializing in Advanced Financial and Estate Planning insurance products. Over twenty years ago he founded and managed Edwin A. Phillipy & Associates. His hobbies were his three grandchildren and sports. He was a walking encyclopedia on The University of Tennessee Football program. His father was a close friend of General Robert R. Neyland and the Phillipy name has been known by Volunteer fans since the early 1940s. Mr. Phillipy was a multi-sport letterman at Memphis Central High and led the Memphis Prep League in extra points and field goals his senior year, and was known by his coaches as “Mr. Hustle.” He excelled in championship tennis through his forties, had been a scratch golfer, and continued to have a low single digit handicap until his death. All of Mr. Phillipy’s friends knew him as “Fat.” Mr. Phillipy was a beloved husband, father, and friend. He will be missed by all who knew him. The family will receive friends from 12:30-2:00 p.m. with the funeral service to follow on Tuesday, July 22 all at Memorial Park Funeral Home. The Phillipy family has requested that in lieu of flowers, to send any memorials or remembrances to Emmanuel United Methodist of Memphis, the University of Tennessee Athletic Department, or the charity of the donor’s choice.Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery, 5668 Poplar Ave. Memphis TN, 38119.
