Edward Oliver White's Obituary
Edward Oliver White, age 90 of Knoxville, died January 11, 2012 at Parkwest Medical Center. Edward was born February 22, 1921 in Memphis, Tennessee. He was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Cathedral. He was a graduate of the University of Tennessee School of Engineering, where he met his wife, the late Mildred Carter. Edward was a member of Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity, and following World War II, became fraternity President for two years. During World War II, Edward served as a single engine fighter pilot instructor and as a Captain B-29 airplane commander of the 73rd Bomb Wing at Saipan Island. He worked for 30 years for Special Instruments Laboratory (Spinlab) of Knoxville, becoming Vice-President and Sales Manager traveling world-wide promoting the use of cotton fiber testers made in Knoxville. After Spinlab was acquired by Zellweger Uster of Switzerland, he continued his work until his 1994 retirement and continued to serve as a consultant after retirement. Edward was the author of numerous technical papers, a member of The American Society for Testing and Materials, and The Textile Quality Control Association. He is preceded in death by his wife, sisters, Agnes White Holbert and Mary White Hutchison of Memphis, TN. He is survived by beloved special friends, the Neil Family and Millie. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. John’s Cathedral, 413 Cumberland Ave., Knoxville, TN 37902. Online condolences may be sent to www.rosemortuary.com. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM Friday at Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel – Knoxville TN. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Memphis TN at a later date.
