Edward Smith's Obituary
EDWARD PRESTON ACKER SMITH, 86, passed away on February 28, 2012. A graduate of the class of 1949 Vanderbilt Law school, he practiced law in Memphis for over 50 years. He was a member and past president of the Memphis Shelby County Bar Association. He was a member of the Tennessee Bar Association, American Bar Association and was a Fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers. At age 29, he was elected to the Tennessee Senate, but it was later determined that he didn’t meet the age requirements and he didn’t serve. He was in the Navy in World War II. He flew for many years as a weekend Navy aviator in the Naval Reserve at the NAS at Millington. He was commanding officer of fighter squadron 792 and attack squadron 792. His last command was Commander, Naval Air Reserve Staff. He retired with the rank of Captain in the Naval Reserve. He will be remembered for his love of flying, the Navy and his country. He was an avid golfer and member of Chickasaw Country Club. He was preceded in death by his wife, Kayse C. Smith and his son, Edward Preston Smith. He leaves his daughter Marsha C. Smith and his wife Jeanne B Smith. He leaves his three grandchildren Ian Smith, Spencer Smith and Kayse Smith. He also leaves four step-daughters Judy Oakes (Neil), Jeanne B Thoma, Debbie B. Carosella and Lisa B. Jehl (Louis). He leaves nine step-grandchildren, Susan, Elizabeth and Frank Oakes (Melissa), Rich and Josh Toma, Kristin and Cole Carosella and Andrew and Mathew Jehl. The visitation will be Thursday, March 1 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Memorial Park Funeral Home. The funeral service will be on Friday, March 2 at 12:30 p.m. in the Chapel at Second Presbyterian Church with the Entombment with military honors at Memorial Park immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Salvation Army, Memphis Humane Society or the Second Presbyterian Chapel Class.
