Edward Lynn Fly's Obituary
E. Lynn Fly was born August 18, 1941, in Memphis, Tennessee. He retired in 2006, after serving many years as Assistant Professor of Development Studies at State Technical Institute (now Shelby State). He also served as an adjunct professor at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and at Northwest Mississippi State College. In all those institutions, his primary role was teaching various mathematics classes. During those years, Mr. Fly served as a basketball referee, completing nearly 40 years of service in that role.
Lynn attended Guthrie Elementary School, Bellevue Junior High School, and Treadwell High School. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree from Murray State University in 1964 and a Master’s Degree from the University of Memphis in 1966.
He was a basketball coach at Christian Brothers College before moving to Nebraska where he served as assistant principal at schools in Roseland and Palmer. In 1969, he moved to Lake Providence, Louisiana, and served as the founding principal of Briarfield Academy. Opportunity knocked in 1970 and Mr. Fly moved to Bastrop, Louisiana, where he served as the founding principal of Prairie View Academy. At these institutions, he assisted with coaching and sports, as well as serving as a driver education instructor.
Lynn loved basketball, as well as his years of teaching. Many folks recognize him for his years of serving as Santa Claus for pets at various locations.
He is survived by his sister, Nancy Manning, of Quinlan, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents Annie Hayes and Ollie Edward Fly.
