Edward Lee "Ed" Powell's Obituary
Edward Lee Powell, Sr., loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather, passed away June 16, 2016. Ed served with the 187th Airborne Regimental Combat team in Korea and was a graduate of Memphis State University. Ed was a long time member of Second Presbyterian Church where he was a former deacon and president of the 3M’s (More Mature Members) He was a research chemist, Certified Industrial Hygienist, and retired employee of Schering-Plough (now Merck). He was a 50 year member of the American Chemical Society and served as president of the Memphis chapter. He was also a former president of the Memphis Industrial Hygiene Society and former editor of the Southern Chemist. Ed was a member of the American Academy of Industrial Hygiene and the American Society of Safety Engineers. He took great pride in working with the Boy Scouts and was a Scoutmaster of Troops 40 and 86, Cub Scout and Boy Scout Commissioner, and received the Southeast District Award of Merit. He was preceded in death by his beloved son, Mark Cooper Powell and parents, Oscar and Marie Powell and is survived by his wife, Dr. Marilyn Jane Cox Powell and sons, Edward Lee Powell, Jr. (Bonnie), and Kevin A. Powell (Sharon) of Collierville and grandchildren Elizabeth Emmerson (Roger) of Cordova, Edward L. Powell, III “Trey” (Chelsea) of Memphis, Rachael, Brook, and Kristen Powell of Collierville and great grandsons, Cooper and Avery. Visitation will be 5 pm – 7 pm, Sunday, June 19 at Memorial Park Funeral Home and Monday, June 20 at 10 am in the Salmon Room before 11 am services in the Chapel of Second Presbyterian Church. Burial will be private in Memorial Park Cemetery.
