Earl Wilson Cooper's Obituary
Mr. Earl Wilson Cooper, 95, of Memphis, TN returned to his heavenly home on Friday, October 7, 2016, to reunite with his loving wife of 67 years, Sybil Tilghman Cooper. He passed away peacefully in the home that he shared with Sybil, and where they raised their two children, Larry Cooper of Memphis, TN and Lynne Cooper Jackson (Bill) of Atoka, TN. He also leaves behind two granddaughters, Kristi Jackson of Lake Charles, LA and Wendye Jackson Horner (Brian) of Atoka, TN; three great-grandchildren, Madison Carter and Nicholas Horner of Atoka, TN and Lennon Cooper Cormie of Lake Charles, LA; one sister, Bonnie Warman of McKenzie, TN and a sister-in-law, Shirley Cooper of Dyer, TN. Earl was preceded in death by his two brothers, Floyd Cooper and Glenn Cooper and their parents, Odie and Stella Hicks Cooper, all of Dyer, TN. There are also nieces and nephews to whom Earl had become the patriarch of the family. Earl was a long time member of Second Presbyterian Church of Memphis, TN and a former member of Highland Heights C.P. Church, also of Memphis, TN. In addition, Earl was a member of The Most Worshipful Grand Lodge F. & A. M. of Tennessee, where he was raised to the sublime degree of Master Mason on May 21, 1956, as a member of the Bartlett Lodge No. 211. Earl was a veteran of WWII, where he served in the Army’s 460th Amphibious Truck Company, participating in the D-Day invasion of Normandy and other campaigns in Europe, including the Battle of Bulge, Central Europe, Rhineland, Northern France and Ardennes. Earl was truly a member of “The Greatest Generation”, of which his loved ones were extremely proud. The family will receive friends from 12-1 p.m. on Tuesday, October 11, 2016 at Memorial Park Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m., with burial following at Memorial Park Cemetery. The family requests donations be made to The Wilson Church Planting Fund or the Caring Ministry Fund, both at Second Presbyterian Church of Memphis.Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery, 5668 Poplar Ave. Memphis, TN 38119, “Celebrating Life… Behind the Stone Wall”.
