I wrote in her memory book at her celebration, the Gail I knew gathered no moss. She lived life to the fullest, every moment, full steam. If you really knew her, you know what a giving and thoughtful woman she was. I will miss her.

We celebrate you today, Gail. I’m so grateful to have been able to know you—an incredibly intelligent, passionate one-of-a-kind pioneer. You generously shared so much with so many. Utmost, you were devoted to your beautiful family. You taught me to always find joy and beauty in life. Thank you.
Susan was so caring. For everyone and everything. Didn’t surprise me about her request to support the Humane Society
I told my six rescue dogs and one rescue cat about her passing. They reminded me of the poem of the “rainbow bridge”

I worked with Dr. Thurmond (Gail) for about 15 years and remember how she methodically worked to improve the quality of patient care. Our areas of interest overlapped with infection prevention. She immersed herself in the science and administrative aspects of preventing nosocomial infections and significant improvements were documented by objective measurements. She made a difference in infection control and many other areas of patient safety.
But some of the best times with her were eating lunch together with Dr Bill Tettelbach, among others, and discussing The Rolling Stones, and many other topics.

I had the privilege of working with Dr. T over the last 21 years during my tenure in Information Systems at MLH. She was passionate about ensuring we were “doing the right thing” for the patients, as well as the providers that used the computer system to assist in caring for the patients. We worked many long hours together (including nights and weekends), most recently during the COVID pandemic. I loved working with her. She was tough, but fair, and always made sure to give credit and public “thank yous” for the work performed. I will miss seeing her emails signed with “Xs and Os” and will most miss her laugh. She was one of a kind- May her memory be for blessing.
Last year Dr. Gail took me to see the Tampa Bay Bucs play the NO Saints in New Orleans. (She was really taking me to see "her boy" Tom Brady!) The game was dull but the weekend was fun and I'll always remember and cherish our time together.
Gail Thurmond was a highly principled physician who was driven to improve patient safety and quality at Methodist LeBonheur Healthcare. Her success is evidenced by the excellent quality ratings that MLH has enjoyed during her tenure as Chief Quality Officer. All patients who have passed through the doors of MLH owe her a sincere thank you for her passion to always do the right thing when it came to patient safety and quality. Personally, Gail was fun to work with and a caring person who enjoyed the love and respect of her colleagues and admiration of her friends. I am so saddened by her passing. She will surely be missed by all in the MLH family. Prayers for her family and loved ones both inside and outside of work.
