Dorothy Stegmeir May's Obituary
Dorothy “Dot” Stegmeir May died Wednesday, January 21, 2009 after a long struggle with complications resulting from a fall. Mrs. May was predeceased by her husband, Mr. John Kirby May of Memphis and her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Edward Stegmeir of Nashville, TN. Dot was a graduate of Ward Belmont and Vanderbilt University where she was a member of Tri Delta sorority. While attending Vanderbilt she met her husband. As a bride, Dot moved to Memphis where she became involved in many civic and social activities. She was a member of Second Presbyterian Church, Le Bonheur Club, board member of Le Bonheur hospital for six years, member of Les Passees, Woman’s Exchange and Arawata Garden Club. Dot also served as past president of Noel Club and was a member of the Memphis Country Club. Dot served on the board of the Marguerite Piazza Gala for St. Jude Hospital. With family and friends, she delivered meals on wheels for MIFA for fifteen years. She especially looked forward to a family tradition of delivering meals on Christmas day. Honoring her passion for fashion, Dot was elected to the Hall of Fame of the Ten Best Dressed Ladies in Memphis. She was also honored to reign as Queen of Memphis in 1963. Mrs. May leaves her daughter, Lucie May Thompson and her granddaughter; Dorothy “May” Thompson Walker (Mrs. Patrick). The family expresses their appreciation to the wonderful staff at the Village of Germantown for their outstanding nursing facility and to the caring professionals of Methodist Hospice.Services for Mrs. May will be Monday, January 26th at 10:30AM at Second Presbyterian Church Chapel. The family will be available in the Salmon Room for visitation immediately following the service.
