Dorothy Sue Smith's Obituary
Dorothy Sue Smith, (89), of Memphis, TN, passed away on August 8 at home. Miss Smith was born July 22, 1934, the youngest of three daughters, to Robert Preston and Gladys Kendall Smith. She was a valedictorian of her Memphis Tech High School class, and in 1956 began her career as manager of the payroll department at Leader Federal Bank for Savings. She retired from the bank after 40 years of service.
Miss Smith was a member of First United Methodist Church of Memphis. She grew up at the former Galloway United Methodist Church where she was the first woman to be elected to chair the church’s Trustees and the Administrative Board. She taught Sunday School in the Children’s Department and the Junior Highs and sang in the church choir. For many years she was a Lay Member of the Memphis Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church and served on the Conference Committee on Stewardship. In addition, she has been a board member and treasurer of the Metropolitan Missionary Society, the United Methodist Neighborhood Center, and the Asbury District of the United Methodist Women.
As an active member of the Beethoven Club of Memphis for more than 50 years, Miss Smith participated in the Young Artists Groups, served as president of the Musical Arts Group, and was currently a board member of the Senior Club. She served as treasurer of the Senior Club for 18 years.
Miss Smith enjoyed many friendships and her family which includes her sisters, the late Annabelle (the late George) Chumney and Gladys (the late Wilson) Mays, her niece Suzanne Mays, her nephews Stirling (Cindy) Mays, David (Susan) Chumney, James (Claire) Mays and the late Robert (Janis survives) Chumney, and their families, as well as several cousins.
Funeral Services will be held at Memorial Park Funeral Home on Friday, August 18, 2023 in the Fireside Chapel at 11:00 a.m. Visitation will be held an hour prior to the service from 10:00 am – 11:00 am. Burial to follow at Forest Hill Cemetery – Midtown. Memorials can be given to Church Health, 1350 Concourse Ave, Suite 142, Memphis TN 38104.
