Dorothy Shumate's Obituary
Dorothy Holdbrooks Shumate passed away peacefully Thursday, December 29th after celebrating her 90th birthday on Christmas Eve. She was born in Haleyville, Alabama on December 24th, 1921. Mrs. Shumate, a business woman, formerly managed her real estate agency and co-founded Key Homes, Inc. She was past president of the local chapter of the American Business Women’s Association and was active in many civic and social organizations in Memphis and Houston, Texas. She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, John William Shumate. Coming from a family of nine, she leaves behind Mrs. Clara Posey, a sister, and Mr. L.J. Holdbrooks, a brother, and several Brother and Sister-in-laws, in Alabama. She is also survived locally by her daughter, Patricia Gafford, a son, Kim Shumate, daughter-in- law, Glenda, three grandchildren, Rick Swain (of North Carolina), Andrea Mann, Stephen Shumate, their spouses, two great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and friends. The family wishes to thank the people at Foxbridge Community for her loving care. In lieu of flowers, the family requests any memorials sent to the local Alzheimer’s Association or a charity of the donor’s choice.
