Dorothy Mae Schmidt Ledbetter's Obituary
Dorothy Mae Schmidt Ledbetter passed from this life on December 28, 2015 and peacefully entered the presence of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, to join her husband, Robert Arlie Ledbetter, Jr., to whom she was lovingly wed for sixty-five years. Dorothy and Robert’s greatest assets were their beliefs in the One True God, living out those beliefs and serving as an example of the Christian life to their children and others. Dorothy was born to Ernest Miles and Stella Schmidt on February 5, 1932 in Memphis, TN. She attended Central High School where she met Robert. At 17 years old, they eloped in Hernando, MS after only one month of dating. They were blessed with three loving children: Robert Ledbetter (Rebecca), Nancy Hurlburt (Preston), and Jamie Doyle (Kevin); grandchildren: Joshua, Claire, Rudy, Leah, Kristi, Robert, and Jessy; great grandchildren: Gabriel, Dalton, Caleb, Miles, Hannah, Gage, Natalie, Lucy and Hayleigh. Dorothy was a dedicated Christian and long member of Central Church of Memphis, TN (now located in Collierville, TN) before moving to Tiptonville, TN. She retired from the Lake County Regional Prison where she was the secretary to the Warden. She was characterized by hospitality. It was her joy to welcome people to her home. “Granny” enjoyed cooking (we believe her secret ingredient was love) and doting her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was an avid quilter and loved needle-pointing, gardening, and doing jigsaw and crossword puzzles. The family will receive friends on Thursday, December 31 from 12 PM until her funeral service begins at 1 PM at Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery, her grandson, Rev. Joshua Hurlburt officiating. Remembrances may be sent to Mid-South Parkinson Foundation or the Baptist Reynolds Hospice House. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery, 5668 Poplar Ave., Memphis TN 38119. (901) 768-8930. “Celebrating Life……..Behind the Stone Wall.”
