Dorothy McGinnis' Obituary
Dorothy Joseph McGinnis, 94, died Thursday, November 26, 2015 at her home in Germantown, TN. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, December 2, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. at Memorial Park Cemetery Funeral Home in Memphis, TN, followed by the service at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be at Memorial Park. Dorothy was born on October 27, 1921 in Memphis to Henry Sheffield Joseph and Josie Anna Moore. She lived in the White Station community, on the corner of Poplar and Colonial, over 35 years. She graduated from the old Mann Private School, and received her B.S. and M.A. degrees from Memphis State University. She married her college sweetheart, William Alexander McGinnis, in 1941. Dorothy was employed by the Memphis City School System for more than 30 years, serving as art teacher and guidance counselor at White Station High School, and later as Administrator of the Division of Psychological Services at Oakville Mental Health Center. Dorothy’s husband, Bill, who was Director of Vocational Education for Memphis Public Schools for 30 years, preceded her in death in 2004. Dorothy’s professional affiliations included membership in WTEA, MEA, past president of Epsilon Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, and a life member of the Memphis PTA. She was also a member of Watauga Chapter, DAR, Henry Smith Chapter of Colonial Dames, Jamestown Chapter DAC, and Magna Charta Society. Dorothy and Bill were long-time members of Mullins United Methodist Church. Her hobbies were painting, sewing, golf, and traveling. Dorothy is survived by her son, William Alexander McGinnis, Jr. (Ronnie Margaret) of Jackson MS; two granddaughters, Cricket McGinnis Brown of Greenwood, MS and Christy McGinnis Cooper (Jay) of Mountain Home AR; and four great-grandchildren. Dorothy’s family expresses deep appreciation to Kae King for her loving friendship, and to Lesten Jamison for her devoted care, assisted by Diane Simms. Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis.
