Dorothy Gilroy McDonald's Obituary
Dorothy Gilroy McDonald, age 96, died at home Wednesday, October 26. Born in St. Louis September 2, 1915 to Dorothy and Paul Gilroy, she was raised in Lakewood, a suburb of Cleveland, Ohio. Dorothy was a graduate of Ohio Wesleyan University, where she majored in home economics and was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma. Engaged at the Kentucky Derby, she married Jay W. McDonald and moved to Memphis in 1946. Dorothy soon became involved in several civic organizations, and she was a devoted member of the Le Bonheur Club, Tuesday Study Club, and the Grand Krewe of Memphis, as well as a longtime member of Second Presbyterian Church and the Memphis Country Club. A loving wife and mother, Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband Jay W. McDonald and leaves three children – Joel McDonald Cox, Jay Paul McDonald (Meredith), and David Gilroy McDonald (Marion) – five grandchildren, a niece, and several cousins. Visitation is scheduled for Saturday, October 29 from 10:00 until 11:00 AM at Second Presbyterian Church followed by funeral services at 11:00 AM in the chapel. The family requests that any memorials be directed to Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital, Second Presbyterian Church, or a charity of the donor’s choice.
