Dorothy Jean Johnson Lewis' Obituary
Dorothy Jean Johnson Lewis, 85, passed away peacefully after a long illness on June 1, 2018. She was born January 4, 1933 to Elmo Morris Johnson and Louise Dalton Johnson and grew up in Memphis, Tennessee. On August 2, 1953, she married her best friend, Gillie Coupland Lewis, Jr. and their 65 year journey began. After Col. Lewis’ service to our country, they made their home in Memphis. To that union was born, Gillie Coupland Lewis, III. “Gil”, Melissa Louise Lewis (Missy) and Jeffrey Leigh Lewis (Jeff). Affectionately known as Dottie, she was a long-time member of Highland Heights Presbyterian Church and served there as an active member of the Presbyterian Women, teaching Bible School and Sunday School, and serving in other leadership roles. She was an avid University of Memphis fan and always liked to watch the Tigers play! She was a devoted daughter, wife, mother, homemaker, aunt and dear friend to many. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents and dearly loved aunt and uncle, Hugh and Oma Branan. Dot is survived by her son, Gil C. Lewis, III. (Adrianne) of Fort Smith, Arkansas; her daughter, Missy Renfrow of Olive Branch, MS.; and her son, Jeff L. Lewis (Pam) of Memphis. She adored her seven grandchildren Dillon Lewis, Mackenzie Lewis, Tyler Renfrow, Addison Renfrow, Carson Renfrow, Chloe Lewis and Dalton Lewis. They all dearly loved their Nonna. Dorothy leaves all who love her an example of a gracious Christian women who was reverent before God, kind in all her ways, loved her husband, loved her children and was devoted to making a home for her family. (Titus 2) The visitation will be held on Monday, June 4 from 1pm until the time of the funeral at 2pm at Memorial Park Funeral Home. 5668 Poplar Avenue in Memphis. The burial will immediately follow. The Reverend Tim Foster will officiate. The family requests memorial to be sent to Highland Heights Presbyterian Church or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
