Dorothy Lynn Griscom's Obituary
DOROTHY LYNN GRISCOM, 85, of Memphis, died February 16, 2010 at Allen Morgan Health and Rehabilitation Center. Born in Knoxville on October 28, 1924, Miss Griscom was a long-time Memphian. A graduate of Crawford Long Hospital School of Nursing, Atlanta, Georgia, Miss Griscom pursued a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing Education at the University of Georgia, Athens, Georgia and received a Master of Science Degree in Nursing at the University of Colorado, Bolder, Colorado. She returned to Memphis in 1959 and served as Director of Nursing at Methodist Hospital for eighteen years. She also served as Director of Nursing at the City of Memphis Hospital before moving to Knoxville to become Vice President of Nursing at St. Mary’s Hospital. She retired from nursing in 1989. Miss Griscom was a member of numerous professional, honorary and social organizations, including the American Nurses Association, the National League for Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau, Phi Kapa Phi, and Pi Epsilon Iota. Miss Griscom served as President of the Tennessee Nurses Association, the Zonta Club of Memphis, and the Docents at the Memphis Zoo. Miss Griscom is survived by two nieces, Mary Lynn Bonafede of Beaufort, SC and Charlotte Cook of Shakopee, MN; a nephew, Bruce Griscom of Missouri; a step-brother, John Griscom of Georgia and many professional and personal friends who lovingly called her “Miss G.” A memorial service to honor Miss Griscom will be held in the Chapel of the Church of the Holy communion, Episcopal, 4645 Walnut Grove Road on Monday, February 22, 2010 at 1 p.m. A reception will follow in the Parish Hall. Memorials may be made to the Church of the Holy Communion, the Memphis Zoo or a charity of the donor’s choice.
