Dorothy Shearon Finley's Obituary
Dorothy Shearon Finley, 79, passed away Sunday, February 8, 2009 at Methodist Germantown Hospital. She was a member of First Assembly of God Church, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution and the following Quilters Associations: Tennessee Valley Quilters, American Quilter’s, The National Quilting Association, Inc., Master Quilters Guild, Gulf Shores Quilting Association, South/Southwest Quilting and the Memphis Cotton Patchers Quilt Guild. Her quilt “Dot’s Vintage 1983” was the first quilt to be certified a “Masterpiece” by the N.Q.A. Masters Guild Judges and earned her the title N.Q.A. Certified Master. This same quilt won the first Gingher Award for workmanship in the American Quilter’s Society Quilt Show and is now in the permanent collection of the Museum of the American Quilter’s Society in Paducah, KY. She exhibited her quilts widely and competed both nationally and internationally, winning many ribbons and awards. Her work appeared in all the leading quilt magazines, was used on several educational TV programs and many authors of major quilting books featured her quilts. After she retired from competition, she made many, many quilts for the babies born to girls livings at The Love Home Mark 9:37, Inc., located in Germantown. On the back of each of these baby quilts she embroidered “Jesus Loves Me”. This was her little ministry. Dorothy is survived by her son, Irby (Penny) Finley, III of Bartlett, two granddaughters, Keli (David) Loveland of Bartlett, Sara (Patrick) Bingham of Murfreesboro, TN. and four great-grandchildren.Visitation will be held from 5:30-7:30 p.m., Tuesday, February 10, 2009 with the funeral service 2:30 p.m., Wednesday, February 11, 2009, all being held at Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery.In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be sent to First Assembly of God Church or Samaritan’s Purse.
