Dorothy Creath Cottam's Obituary
Dorothy Creath Cottam
On May 8th our beloved Dorothy, known to many as Dot, Granny Dot, DJ, Granny Monster, Granny Angel, Worry Wart, and Aunt Dot, was called home by our Heavenly Father. She is now rejoicing with the angels in heaven.
Dorothy was born in Memphis, Tennessee on March 4, 1932, daughter of Charles Joseph and Dorothy Anna McCormack Creath. She is preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Charles Joseph Creath, Jr., her husband, Donald Lee Cottam, her son Donald Lee Cottam Jr, her granddaughter Jennifer Marie Cottam and her grandson Charles Daniel Cottam.
Dorothy is survived by her children Charles Creath Cottam (Paula) of Jonesboro, Arkansas, James “Jimbo” Allen Cottam (Debbie) of Arden, North Carolina, Christopher Creath Cottam of Prescott, Arizona, Dorothy “Missy” Stovall (Andy) of Hoschton, Georgia and by her daughter-in-law Dyann Cottam of Horn Lake, Mississippi. Granny also leaves behind 8 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren as well as many extended family members.
Dorothy was a devoted mother who raised five children with diverse interests. She also spent time volunteering as a sacristan at St Louis Catholic Church and as a candy striper at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital. She enjoyed vacations at the beach in Destin and playing cards with her friends. She never met a stranger. She touched many lives and was loved by all who knew her. Friends and family knew they were always welcome in her home and she happily fed and entertained them.
We used to tease Granny that if she stopped asking so many questions, God would open the pearly gates for her. One of her favorite sayings was “it is what it is.”
Visitation will be held on Monday, May 15th at 1PM, with service following at 2PM at Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery, 5668 Poplar Ave, Memphis, Tennessee, 38119, where she will be laid to rest. Granny will be greatly missed by all who knew her and her memory will live on in our hearts.
In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate donations to the Church Health Center, 1350 Concourse Ave. Suite 142, Memphis, TN 38104, 901-272-7170 or to another charity of your choice.
