Dorothy M. Burkeen's Obituary
Dorothy Mae “Dot” Burkeen, age 96, of Memphis, TN passed away peacefully on December 25, 2017. Dot was born in Etta, MS and later moved to Memphis where she graduated from Humes High School in 1939, worked for Levi Strauss and was a member of Longstreet Methodist Church. Mrs. Burkeen was a member of Lightman Bridge Club, McWherter Bridge Club, and the Eastern Star. She loved the Lord Jesus Christ and lived life to the fullest: enjoyed playing bridge, dancing, casinos, and adored spending time with family and friends. Dot loved everyone and did not hesitate to hug and tell them, “The Lord loves you and I do, too”!Mrs. Burkeen was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harvest Garland Gaines, one brother, Warren Gaines, one sister, Hilda Smith, two husbands, William A. Smith, Jr and James Glenn Burkeen, one daughter, Brenda Joyce Wade, and a step daughter, Darlene McOwen.She is survived and will be forever remembered by her daughter, Betty Ann McGee (Leonard “Bo”), one step daughter, Teresa Astor (George), 11 grandchildren, Alan McGee, Karen Miller (Larry), Michelle Metz (John), Denise Chunn (Troy), Terri Wade, Jimmy Wade (Debbie), Melissa Angione (Charles), Jennifer Bodovetz (John), Jim Christensen, Jr (Terri), Julie McOwen and Mark David McOwen, 21 great grandchildren, and six great great grandchildren. She will also be forever remembered by numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members and fond friends.The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, December 30, 2017 at Memorial Park Funeral Home. The funeral service will be 2 p.m., Sunday, December 31, 2017 at Memorial Park Funeral Home. The entombment will be in the Memorial Park Mausoleum. Memorial donations in memory of Dot can be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
