Dorma D. Appling's Obituary
Dorma Appling, 82, of Memphis, passed away on January 5, 2015. She is survived by her husband James Appling of 60 years, her son, Bill Appling of Memphis, one daughter, Melanie Drenning and her husband David, of Huntsville, AL, three grandchildren, Lanie, Paul, Wes Drenning, cousins, Ruth Ann Smith of Hot Springs, AR, Jerry Smith, and Jimmy Smith of Little Rock, AR, and many close friends.Mrs. Appling was a Life Member (50 year) at Colonial Baptist Church. She was president of her Sunday School Class (Hope) and dearly loved her fellow Sunday School Class Members. She loved collecting and sending greeting cards to Family and Friends and never missed birthdays, and other occasions, even it if was just a Thinking of You Card. Her children, Melanie and Bill had said that if they ever won the lottery the first thing they would do is buy their Mom a Hallmark Card and Gift Shop. She and Jim were longtime Tiger Fans and Supporters when Tiger football was played at Crump Stadium and Tiger Basketball was played at the Mid-South Coliseum, during the magic days of Larry Finch, Ronnie Robinson and Coach Gene Bartow. She was a quiet but vivacious Tiger Fan. However, the quietness could quickly change if anyone said anything negative about her Tigers. She treasured her Tiger collection and memorabilia such as a wrist band (signed by Bill Laurie) and her, “I would rather be a Finch than a cardinal sweat shirt.”She would want to make sure that her love and appreciation go out to all the nurses and other caregivers on the Baptist Hospital 5th floor step down unit, ICU 2 and Baptist Hospice. She would also want to make sure a special thank you and love go to Dr. Fred Pelz. Her loss will be felt by many. But, comfort will come from the memories and reminiscing of the times we all have shared.“When He has brought out all his own, He goes on ahead of them, and His sheep follow Him because they know His voice.” John 10:4The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Wednesday, January 7, at Memorial Park Funeral Home.
