Doris J. Stephens' Obituary
Doris Jean Stephens, 58, a native Memphian born June 29, 1954, was welcomed home to heaven on July 10, 2012. She graduated from Overton High School in 1972, where she played clarinet in the band. She immediately began her lifelong work with the government, beginning as a clerk for the National Labor Relations Board, and including clerical and administrative positions for the Department of Navy, the IRS, the US Army Engineer District, and most recently as a Management and Program Analyst at the Memphis Air Route Traffic Control Center. Her career with the FAA spanned over 25 years, where she was valued and respected by many who called her not only co-worker but dear friend. She was a member of Toastmasters and the Federal Woman’s Program during her tenure with the FAA. She was a long time member of Cherry Road Baptist Church, where she taught GAs, a girls’ mission program for many years. The impact of her faith was far reaching. She had a quiet strength and a gentle loving spirit and she enjoyed her life, family and friends to the fullest. She will be missed by so many whose lives have been blessed to have known her. Upon her diagnosis of acute myeloid leukemia in November of 2011, her friends and family rallied around her to support her through the fight. She did so much for others that they were happy to do even more in return. She fought heroically until her Lord called her to trade her earthly body for a heavenly one. Doris was the wife of Scott Stephens, an amazing husband and care giver. She was preceded in death by her father, Earl O’Neil Moore, and son-in-law, David Parnell. She leaves behind her mother, Mary E. Moore, her brothers Glen Moore (Sharon) and Jerry Moore (Debbie) and sister Patty Moore, her daughters Sarah Parnell and Sharon Johnson (Thomas), her step-son Will Stephens and her three most precious gifts, her grandchildren, Caleb Parnell, Jordan Parnell, and Jake Johnson. Visitation will be held at Memorial Park Funeral Home, Friday, July 13th from 5 to 7pm. Services will be held at Cherry Road Baptist Church, 1421 Cherry Rd, Memphis, TN, 38117, on Saturday, July 14, at 10am. Interment will follow at Memorial Park Southwoods Cemetery. The family requests that any memorial donations be made to the American Cancer Society or the Wings Foundation at West Clinic. Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery, 5668 Poplar Ave. Memphis, TN 38119, (901)767-8930, “Behind the Stone Wall”.
