Doris Casstevens' Obituary
Doris J. Casstevens, 88, passed away peacefully January 19, 2016, in Louisville, KY. A person of caring faith, a beautiful smile, and a robust laugh, she was devoted to her husband of 63 years, proud of her children, and committed to her church. She loved and cared for babies in the church nursery for many years, and later enjoyed the fellowship of her Sunday School class. She had a passion for baking and collecting recipes. She received great joy from watching her grandsons grow into young men– even though she lived apart from them. For 16 years she was the secretary at the University of Memphis Baptist Student Union, where she was a second mom to hundreds of students, many of whom she stayed in contact with after they graduated. She was passionately involved in an array of local Baptist association ministries. Born in Spindale, N.C., she studied at Mars Hill and Gardner Webb colleges. Preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth R. Casstevens, she is survived by two children, Kenneth Reeves Casstevens, Jr. of Memphis, and Jeanne Casstevens Caldwell (Chris) of Louisville, KY; grandsons Carter and Langdon Caldwell; and generations of nieces and nephews. Her funeral will be Monday January 25th, 2016, at 11:00 a.m., with visitation preceding at 10:00 a.m., at Second Baptist Church, 4680 Walnut Grove Rd., Memphis, 38117, Rev. Linda Serino, officiating. Memorial gifts may be made to the church.
