Donna Jane Bowen's Obituary
Donna Jane Bowen age 90 of Bartlett, Tennessee passed away on April 1, 2024 in Collierville, Tennessee.
She was born on September 14th, 1933 in Memphis, Tennessee to the late of Roy Neal and Pauline Welch Neal.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Veron R. Bowen
She is survived by her son Neal Bowen, daughter-in-law Stephanie, two grandsons, Hunter and Charlie, and granddaughter Bronwyn.
She was a member of Cornerstone Church in Bartlett, TN. In her professional life, and deputy inspector general for the United States Navy before her retirement in the late 1980s. She was very active in various teaching capacities, leading women’s Bible studies and as member of her church. She enjoyed playing piano and organ and served as church organist at many of the churches she attended over the years. Donna traveled the world extensively both for fun and as part of her job. She also collected music boxes. More than that, she had desired to help those less fortunate and those in need in any way she possibly could. Particularly, helping women get back on their feet after a loss or tragic life event.
She attended Snowden Elementary, and Central High School. After focusing on business in high school and in college, Donna’s first job was with Union Planters bank. Eventually she found her way to Washington D.C. and worked in the Pentagon with her husband, Lieutenant Commander Vernon R Bowen, USN.
Her accomplishments were both inspiring and groundbreaking. Notably, she made history as the 1st Female Inspector General of the United States Navy. Her dedication and trailblazing spirit paved the way for other women in the military and beyond.
Services for Donna will be held on Tuesday, April 9, 2024 at 11:00am in the Fireside Chapel at Memorial Park Funeral Home. Visitation will be held an hour prior. Entombment will follow in Memorial Park Mausoleum.
