Donald Wayne Manley's Obituary
DONALD WAYNE MANLEY, 78, passed away on Saturday, October 27, 2012. He was an architect and native Memphian, and was born on April 24, 1934, the son of Ernest Leo Manley and Mildred Louise Smith Manley, both deceased, and was the third of four children, all of whom are deceased. He graduated from Mallory Heights Elementary School, South Side High School, and Rice Institute in Houston, Texas. He served on active duty in the U.S. Navy as a commissioned officer (LTJG) in the Office of Naval Intelligence and was honorably discharged. He became a licensed architect in 1961 and continued to practice until his death. He was proud of his heritage and his profession. He participated in the design and construction of a number of buildings, including several schools in Memphis including Lanier Junior High, Germantown Elementary and the University of Memphis Law School, and Wilson, Arkansas schools. He was a member of the Christian Church and served on the Board of Deacons of 3 different churches for 20 consecutive years. He was consistent with his standards of ethics and morals and his decisions, whether personal or business, were always based upon those standards. All of his relationships, whether family or business, were very personal and special to him. Being a member of the American Institute of Architects, he served at the local, state and regional levels. Also, he worked extensively in The Construction Specifications Institute at the local, regional and national levels. He received numerous awards including the highest chapter award which is named for him, the highest region award and the 2nd highest national award. His profession carried him to work in 26 states and 72 cities in this country, but he was always available to help anyone that he knew. He enjoyed his family, and dogs, travelling with his wife, his work, and was an avid golfer, being a member of Whitehaven Country Club and Colonial Country Club. He leaves his wife of 58 years, Marylyn Strange Manley; daughters, Marylyn Kay Manley of Memphis and Joy Elaine Rogers (Montie) of Dyersburg; three grandchildren, Evan C. Butler of San Diego, CA, Caitlin G. Rogers of Charlotte, NC and Connor Wayne Rogers of Dyersburg. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The family will receive friends from 12 p.m. until service time at 1 p.m., Wednesday, October 31 at Memorial Park Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery.
