I just saw the obituary of Mr. Ballard’s passing. I met Mr. Ballard one time 3 years ago. He came up to me at Office Depot because he noticed my St. Louis Cardinals hat. We started talking like we had been old friends even though he was 50 years older than myself. I was just amazed at the stories this man who was 95 at the time shared with me with a vivid memory a lot sharper than my own. We talked for an hour that day and I left Office Depot forgetting what I had gone there to purchase, but I left with an autographed picture of Mr. Ballard in a Cardinal uniform that hangs on my office wall in Collierville to this day. I just want to tell his family how this chance encounter with a man I never saw after that day still fills my mind and I was blessed to have met such a genuine, and kind man who loved the lord, his life, his family and the St. Louis Cardinals ! I was so sorry to hear of the passing of Reverend Ballard, but know he is now with The Lord and all of his family in heaven. Reverend Ballard was a minister to my mother, Evelyn Pierce, at Sutherland Place and Germantown Plantation. They were quite close and since they were both from Kentucky, he called her his “fellow Kentucky Colonel.” When my mother died in July 2011, Reverend Ballard presided over her memorial service in the chapel at Germantown Plantation. I will always be grateful to Reverend Ballard for the fondness he showed my mother and myself in her final years. Cindi Perkins
