I am so sorry to hear this news. First, my prayers go out to Ken and Barbara. They are tremendous people and great parents and I always admired how supportive they were of Derek. It was quite an honor and I feel so blessed to have been able to coach Derek at the U of M. He’s the perfect example of how we changed Memphis football. He was a great character young man and a great teammate who gave everything he had every week. I’m sure he was the same as a husband and a dad. Prayers to all his family and friends.

Derek was a great guy and teammate. We were roommates his freshman year at Memphis. He’s the type of guy and teammate you wanted to be around: great attitude, consistent and reliable work ethic, and his encouraging smile. Parents Ken and Barbara are real sweet people. My heart breaks for Kristen, their sons, and the entire Clenin Family. The Lord’s grace and peace be with them during this time.

I had the privilege of working with Derek over the past several years. His knowledge and understanding of the industry made him a true professional, but his honesty, integrity and genuine warmth made him so much more to everyone who met him.

I worked as a Chiropractic Assistant to Dr.Clenin.
We worked many hours together & I quickly became aware of how much his family meant to him. He was so very proud of his children, Angela, Derick & Daniel..

I met Derick in the clinic one day when he came in the therapy bay with his beautiful, sweet smile! He was such a wonderful guy, always made a point to ask how I was doing..such a wonderful young man.
My heart goes out to his wife, children & all the Clenin family. Derick was certainly a special young man. Touched so many lives. His memory & legacy will surely live forever. RIP Derick

While 10 years behind me at MUS, I got to know Derek as an adult. He was such a winner and competitor, and he was such a classy and respectful man. I know that he had such a positive influence on so many young Owls. I want to offer my sincere condolences to the Clenin family. I know he is no longer suffering and smiling down on all of us. Derek, you were a true warrior and champion!

I am so sorry to see this and pray for his family and friends. I worked at Memphis as the Football SID when he was a player and the first thing that came to mind when thinking of Derek was his smile. He was such a good person and really feel for his family right now.

I was able to share the field and locker room with Derek for 2 years while in Memphis. This news is heart breaking and I am deeply saddened for his family. His mom and dad were always in support and so nice and uplifting. Derek exemplified all the qualities you would want in a teammate, smart, hard working, tough, gutsy and would put himself on the line for you. I know the same would have been said now in his daily life as well. My thoughts and prayers are with him and family in this time of grieving. Victory in Jesus for this one of a kind Tiger!

What a great young man. I was so privileged to have known Derek for the past 16 years. My heart grieves for Kristen, 3 young boys, Colt,,Cooper, and Cruz, and super mom Barbara, brother Daniel, dad Ken, and all the extended family and friends who are too numerous to count
One snowy, freezing night in 2017 in aspen Colorado, Derek and I were walking back from dinner on a dark dead end street, when only 30 feet from the front door, I slipped on black ice and was concussed and knocked unconscious. Derek knew immediately to call 911 and get me to hospital. I literally owe my life to Derek Clenin. Humanity needs more Derek’s, and I believe there are 3 more young men who will carry on Derek’s legacy. I LOVE YOU MAN.
