Dennis Paul Everitt's Obituary
Dennis Paul Everitt, Sr. age 69, of Memphis, Tennessee, was born on February 21, 1953, and passed away on June 17, 2022, after a brief battle with cancer. Survived by his wife of 42 years, Patty Wilson Everitt, daughters Patricia Adrian (Nelson), DeeDee Shashy (John), son, Dennis Paul Everitt, Jr., grandchildren Meriwether Smith Adrian, May Wilson Adrian, and John Charlton Shashy, Jr. He is also survived by his sister, Paula Everitt, numerous nieces and nephews and many cousins who he enjoyed spending time with in Arkansas. Dennis was preceded in death by his parents George Paul and Mary Ann Everitt and brothers, Zinn and Allen Everitt.
A lifelong resident of Memphis, Tennessee, Dennis graduated from Whitehaven High School. He was a licensed Realtor and General Contractor for 36 years. He was a partner at Everitt Construction Company, along with his father, where he built many homes in Germantown in the late 80s, 90s and 2000s. His obsessive attention to detail made him a great home builder. In 1990, Everitt Construction Company won the People’s Choice Award, Chairman’s Award, and Second Place Main-Site Award at the Vesta Home Show in Dogwood Grove Subdivision, Germantown, Tennessee.
Dennis was a master carpenter who made his family many handmade furniture pieces and toys that they will treasure. He had a unique sense of humor and loved making gifts for his grandchildren, such as preserved and painted beetles and cicadas mounted on plaques, dollar bills with his face on them, jewelry boxes and beautiful, functional wooden train sets. During Christmastime, he loved to find dried out frogs and make Christmas ornaments by painting and lacquering them. One year, to her surprise, he even made a broach for his mother-in-law, Zee Wilson, with a dead frog.
Dennis was an avid Alabama Football fan and Tide Pride member for 22 years, and a lifelong Memphis Tigers fan. He loved going on overnight canoe trips and trout fishing in Arkansas. He and his son attended many concerts over the years together. Dennis was widely known for his chosen uniform of Hawaiian shirts and cargo shorts. He spent most of his retirement maintaining his backyard and working on projects in his shop. He especially loved making birdhouses. Each day he sent photos of newspaper comics to his children and updated them on the latest news. Dennis loved being “Grandad” most of all.
He will be greatly missed by his friends and family.
Visitation will be held at Memorial Park Funeral Home & Cemetery on Monday, June 20th, from 5:00-7:00pm with a private burial on Tuesday, June 21st. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Memphis Botanic Garden, where Dennis and Patty were married, Boys & Girls Club of Memphis, or your favorite charity.
