Deloris A. Nickum's Obituary
Deloris Anne Hammons Nickum, 77, of Cordova, TN, formerly of Mayfield KY, passed away on September 28, 2013 after a long illness. Deloris was preceded in death by her husband, Don S Nickum, her parents William Virgle Hammons and Rozelle Goodner Hammons, and a brother, David Hammons. She is survived by her three children, Don S Nickum Jr. (Michelle) of Westfield,IN., Danielle Nickum (Dave) of Cordova, TN, and Diedre Cantrell (Brent) of Louisville,TN. She was the proud grandmother of Ian, McKenna and Pierce Nickum, Trinity Falter Kahn, Kelly Falter and Maegan Cantrell. She is also survived by her brother and sisters William Hammons, Rockwall, TX. Londa Deegan, The Woodlands, TX, Mary Husbands of Florence, MS and Peggy Tinley of McGregor, TX. Deloris was born in Waco, TX and that is where she met the love of her life, Don. She graduated from Waco High in 1954 and attended Baylor University. She was a graduate of the American Dental Assistants. She continued her studies at Murray State University after she and Don moved their family to Mayfield KY in the 1970s. She graduated with honors, obtaining a Master’s degree and Rank II designation in Education and went on to teach in the Mayfield City School System until her retirement. She greatly loved all her students and was so proud of each and every one of them. She was a member of Kappa Delta Pi education honor society and Alpha Delta Kappa, KY Alpha Beta chapter. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mayfield, KY. Deloris had a joy for life and her family and she bravely fought Alzheimer’s for many years. She taught her children to love and honor family and friends and to stand by them when the going gets tough. Her children lovingly cared for her in her last years just as she did for them as they grew up. She never lost her smile or the twinkle in her eye and remained beautiful to her last day. She loved gardening, Las Vegas shows and Judy Garland movies. A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m., Tuesday, October 1, 2013 at Memorial Park Funeral Home in Memphis TN. Donations may be made in her memory to the Alzheimer’s Organization.
