David Lee West, Sr.'s Obituary
David Lee West, Sr, 57, of Arlington, TN, passed away on May 14, 2022.
David was born on September 1, 1964 in Memphis, TN, to Eugene C. West and Vivian Womble West.
David fell in love with baseball in the first grade. He was drafted in 1983 out of Craigmont High School in the fourth round by the New York Mets as a left- handed pitcher. He played minor league ball until 1988 when he got called up to play for the Mets. He was with them from 1988 - 1989. He was traded to the Minnesota Twins where he played from 1989 - 1992 and won the World Series in 1991. He was then traded to the Philadelphia Phillies where he played from 1993 - 1996 and pitched in the 1993 World Series. In 1997 he went on to play for the Fukuoka Daiei Hawks in Japan and retired after playing for the Boston Red Socks in 1998.
David was a natural born coach. He was wonderful mentor and role model for many young men. After retirement he gave private pitching lessons in Stuart Florida as well as coaching for Indian River Community College. In 2008 he moved back to Memphis where he continued as a pitching instructor and coach for the Dulin Dodgers. In 2011 he began working for Memphis Baseball Academy. He also coached the Memphis Tigers, the same organization that he played for as a youth.
As passionate as he was about his career, he was even more passionate about his family and friends. He was a devoted husband, father, son, brother and friend. As big as he was physically, his heart was even bigger. He loved with all he had. We were so blessed to know that love.
He is survived by his wife, Jennifer West, daughter, Casey Christine West, son, David Lee West, Jr. step-son, William Cole Glemser, mother, Vivian West and brother, Eugene West, II and a large extended family.
David was preceded in death by his father, Eugene C. West, Sr.
