David D. Field, Sr.'s Obituary
David D. Field, Sr. (Lt. Col. Ret. USA) died 10/20/10 of heart failure at the Allen Morgan Health and Rehabilitation Center, Memphis, TN at the age of 92. He was born on March 9, 1918 in Long Branch, New Jersey. He is preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Rosaland Helms Field of Calhoun City and Bay Saint Louis, MS. He is survived by son, David Field, Jr. (Marcia) of Memphis; two granddaughters, Christy Jones (Steve) of Marion, AR; and Natalie Murphy (Brad) of Brighton, TN; three great grandchildren, Ashlee Jones, Emilee Jones and Cooper Williams, and sister, Mrs. Eda Zahl, of Connecticut. Mr. Field graduated in 1939 magna cum laude from Colgate University with a B.A. degree and was a Phi Beta Kappa. He received an M.A. degree from Ohio University in 1955 and an additional 33 hours of graduate studies at the College of William and Mary. He was a long time member of Bellevue Baptist Church and a lay minister to the elderly at four local nursing homes until 2005. He served in the U.S. Army for 20 years retiring in 1962. He served in WWII, Korea and Vietnam. He was awarded the Bronze Star for actions in Korea and received several other medals of distinction. After military service he was an assistant principal at Newport News High School in VA, Registrar and a professor for 20 years at Thomas Nelson University in Hampton,VA, where he was also appointed Professor Emeritus. He was selected as one of the outstanding educators in America in 1971, 1972 and 1973. Mr. Field taught six years in Memphis as Adjunct Professor at Southwest Tennessee Community College and conducted classes for inmates on campus at the Federal Correction Institute, the West Tennessee Correctional Facility and the Shelby County Correction Center. Mr. Field published over 200 articles in the subjects of the humanities and golf. He was the oldest active member of the Golf Writers Association of America.
