DARRYL: Back to the summer before the 8th grade. Darryl stopped by my house on Upper PattonRd to buy bicycle axle from me. He didn't know we had not eaten in more than a week. He was our angel as we were able to buy enough food for a meal. I have always remembered him for this......I never saw him again......a real angel, sent by God.

I am very saddened to hear of Darryl’s passing. He was a lifelong friend of my cousin Richard Dunham, who unfortunately passed away earlier in the year. I saw Darryl at Richard’s funeral in June. He was leaving from there to head to their 50th high school reunion. My heart goes out to the Hannah family.
Darryl was always friendly with everyone. I went to school 1st grade thru 12th grade. He will always be remembered fondly. My sympathy goes out to his family.

My deepest sympathies Sylvia, Dawn and Tobie…there are few words that provide comfort. Just know that there are many hearts surrounding you to provide strength. It is with great sadness I write to offer condolences to Sylvia, Tobie, Dawn and the whole extended family. Darryl was the epitome of “gentle man.” He always had time for others, caring deeply for those he befriended in life. I will remember him as a valued friend and comrade from our years in the U.S. Air Force and later at PeopleExpress Airlines. Not only did you, Sylvia, and Darryl reach out to me and my family to help facilitate our move to New Jersey, you put us up in your own home for over a month while we settled in! Darryl was also a great mentor to me in that transition to “airline pilot.” While the years have separated us geographically once we all departed New Jersey, that bond of often unspoken friendship lives on. Darryl shared your great faith in God; we know he is at peace in the arms of his loving Creator. While we mourn his suffering and dying, we rejoice in his personal resurrection. Darryl was a GREAT Pilot and a VERY TOUGH Guy! He was a true pleasure to fly with. He did it right, ran a crew REALLY well, and always got the FedEx boxes to a million different doorsteps on time. I kept running into him shopping at the Germantown Kroger, sometimes looking like he’d just been rolled out of Surgery. But there he was, not one single gripe or complaint, just eager to try to live every moment to the fullest. They didn’t make any other fellows from his same mold, but we’d all be better off if they had. I have a Back Procedure tomorrow at the same time as his Service, though I wish I was there to shake some hands. I believe we all just got one more Guardian Angel who can help keep us out of trouble.
