WOW, I really don't know where to begin. I met Darlene on the Club scene in Memphis, TN in late 1971 when I was 16 yrs old. Darlene was the ONLY person who knew how old I was and took me under her wing. She was one that made sure she looked and dressed like a million bucks before leaving home to party. I had never seen anyone tuck a shirt in a pair of jeans like Darlene could and if it wasn't right she would start all over until she had it perfect and then we were able to hit the road 30 mins later. Loving to dance we would start on Friday night and end on Sunday night. She and I instantly became friends and remained friends for many years. Out of sight never meant out of mind. I used to drop in and see her when she and Huey lived in Raleigh and would always find her in the backyard by the pool.
Darlene taught me alot in life, like how to cha cha and how to be the woman I am today. She carried ALOT of wisdom in her mind. She used to always tell me "I would love to have your long legs" as she was about 5' and I was 5'9" tall and yes I did tower over her.
When my phone rang, up popped Darlene's name and I answered "hey Mama what's going on?" Much to my surprise it was Robert with news I never expected to hear. You are going to be sorely missed but never forgotten, Darlene..I've always looked to you as a sister and my guardian angel. I felt safe with you and I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU. Rest in peace my sweet friend until I come home and see you again when we cha cha in heaven.
