Daniel Hallford's Obituary
DANIEL CLAY HALLFORD, 94, passed away on Tuesday, November 06, 2012. He was born January 4, 1918, and raised in McKenzie, AL. He was the first person in his family to attend college and to graduate from his beloved University of Alabama in 1939. He served 6 years in the U.S. Army, retiring in 1946 as a captain. He was one of the first paratroopers who served our nation and once said, “The idea of jumping out of planes seemed very exciting to a young fellow back in 1940.” After the army, he settled in Memphis where he worked for Plough, Inc. for 37 years, retiring in 1983 as senior vice-president of Administration. He served as president of Junior Achievement of Memphis, and was on the Board of Directors of the Tennessee Independent Colleges Fund. He was active in the Boy Scout organization and was the recipient of the 1977 Silver Beaver Award for “distinguished service to boys.” He was also the president of the Tennessee Council on Economic Education and a member of the Memphis Rotary Club. He was a long-time member of Raleigh United Methodist Church. He was an avid golfer and past-president of Colonial Country Club. More than any of his civic service, Dan will be most remembered for his great love of his family. He is preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Alberta Sawyer Hallford, and one son, John Daniel Hallford. His is survived by 3 sons, Scott S. and Dana Hallford of Jacksonville, FL, Charles R. and Alice Hallford of Daphne, AL, David N. and Sandra Hallford of Cordova, TN, and one daughter, Danise and Mike McGrath of Mt. Juliet, TN; grandchildren, Gregory Hallford, Stephanie and Matt Durnin, Robert Hallford, Wil Hallford, Jessica Hallford and Zachary McGrath; great-grandchildren, Owen Durnin and Mackenzie Durnin. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Mayo Clinic, the Raleigh Methodist Church, the Hallford scholarship at the University of Alabama, or the charity of your choice. The family will receive friends from 5 PM until 7 PM Friday, November 9th at Memorial Park Funeral Home. The memorial service will be Saturday, November 10th at 10 AM in Memorial Park Funeral Home with burial to follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.
