Colleen Coffey Brewer's Obituary
Colleen Coffey Brewer was born in a house on Ayers Street on August 19, 1927 in Memphis, Tennessee. On October 31, 2022, she passed to her Eternal home at the age of 95. As a lifelong Memphis resident, she dearly loved her hometown - especially Court Square, the Orpheum, and the Peabody downtown. It is interesting to note that she graduated from Humes High School about ten years ahead of Elvis who was a friend to her older brothers. Mrs. Brewer was a member of Decatur Street Christian Church, then Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, and finally Christ the King Lutheran Church.
Colleen married Frank Rogers Brewer who was also a native Memphian. She was preceded in death by Mr. Brewer, her dearly loved husband; her father, Frank Coffey Sr.; her mother, Ethia W. Coffey; and her older brothers, Frank L. Coffey and Lionel Guy Coffey.
She is survived by her only daughter, Linda Carol Brewer Gaskins (Jeffrey T. Gaskins, her husband); her three grandsons, Frank Everett Gaskins, Casey, William Gaskins, and Lt. Joseph Earl Gaskins (US Army, currently deployed); 5 nieces and 1 nephew as well as many extended family members and friends.
Colleen Coffey Brewer was active in many aspects of the Memphis community ranging from volunteering at Brooks Art Gallery and Theater Memphis to leading Bible Study Fellowship groups and hosting the Ruth Circle for women of Redeemer Lutheran Church for many years. She and Mr. Brewer enjoyed dancing to big band music, playing bridge and golfing. Additionally, she is remembered for being a great cook and for her love of reading. She also enjoyed canoeing, riding horses, playing baseball with her brothers, playing tennis, and most of all - spending time with her three grandsons.
Her family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to the kind and caring staff at Bright Glade Nursing Home who recently provided her care during her most difficult years. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital by calling (800) 213-6584 or by emailing [email protected]
