Colleen Beck's Obituary
Colleen Fly Beck of Memphis, passed away June 2, 2015. She was born September 21, 1932 in Belmont, MS. She was a graduate of The University of Mississippi with a BA in Journalism and a Masters In English. She was active in intermural sports including golf, softball, volleyball and fencing. She remained a lifelong rebel fan. She loved SEC football and could talk the game with anyone. An avid and accomplished golfer, she served on the board of directors of the Memphis Area Women’s Golf Association, the Tennessee Women’s Golf Association as well as the Southern Golf Association. Colleen enjoyed a wonderfully successful competitive golf career winning the club championship at Windyke CC a remarkable nine times. In 1974 she won the MAWGA Championship commonly know as “The Women’s City”” She was also inducted into the Memphis Park Commission Hall of Fame. Professionally she worked in the early years of the television industry at Channel 13, at a time when few women were in the field. Lance Russell remarked; “”without Colleen we would not have gotten anything done.”” Later she was employed in the then new and growing women’s athletic department at The University of Memphis and served in that roll for some 20 plus years. She loved University of Memphis sports, “”except when they play Ole Miss””. She considered life to be “”continuing education”” She is survived by her son, Bob Beck of Memphis, her daughter Susan Standeffer and her husband Bud Standeffer of Tuscaloosa; grandsons Carter, Harrison, Mclean and Beck Standeffer of Tuscaloosa and grandson Jackson Beck of Memphis. Visitation 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. Saturday, June 6 with funeral service following at 11:30 a.m. at Memorial Park Funeral Home, 5668 Poplar Avenue, Memphis, TN 38119.
